What is Abscesses ?

Abscesses often arise in the head and neck, especially on the back of the throat and salivary glands in the cheeks (parotid glands). Abscesses can also be found in the brain. Abscesses behind and beside the throat (faringomaksiler abscess) usually occurs due to a throat infection (including infection of the tonsils or adenoids). Throat abscess is more common in children.

Abscesses can also form in the lymph nodes are located beside the throat (an abscess parafaringeal). Abscesses are usually derived from the surrounding infection (eg dental abscess or infection of the salivary glands). Patients experience fever and sore throat, difficulty in opening his mouth. The spread of the infection can cause swelling of the neck. If an abscess causes damage to the carotid artery in the neck, there can be blood clots or bleeding.

Abscesses can also occur at the outlet of one of the parotid gland. Abscess is due to the spread of infection from the mouth and is often found in elderly or people with chronic illnesses who experience dryness in the mouth due to low fluid intake or due to certain drugs (eg antihistamines). Patients feel pain, fever and chills, accompanied by swelling of the neck.
